Building the machine Installing software/hardware Testing

TESTING

The system tested well at the beginning, but I started to get hanging and crashing on windows startup shortly after I started testing the system. I moved the main laptop hard drive into the machine and used it for the OS and that solved all of the instability issues.

The biggest drawback is disk write speed. I think a quick SSD would be great for a scratch drive to capture uncompressed or slightly compressed video. I think I need something that can sustain a 120 MB/sec write speed so that I would be able to use the more energy efficient Intel Celeron chip.

The portable power pack is something outside of my time at the moment. The research and cost of getting and testing batteries and setup would take too many resources at the moment. Especially since...

My video capture solution is kind of obsolete! Thanks to some great stuff by AJA (quite expensive but solid and reliable) they make a much more compact solution that makes ProRes quicktime movies which are very convenient. My system may have some application for studio shooting where a better Blackmagic capture card would allow for a 444 uncompressed capture to RAID storage, or Cineform 444 video to a single SSD.

I learned a lot doing this project and had a fun time doing it. Hopefully my next project is as successful. Thanks.
